Floating in Space With Flies

by Matthew Thomas

This composition is a mellow type of trance song. I didn’t use the high-energy tempo because I couldn’t get the bass drum to sound like what I wanted. Instead I just used 1 beat per minute and the final result seemed to work. I was inspired by a Jamiroquai song called Runaway. I actually sampled the song as one of my first instruments in the composition and found that it gave a space feel to it. Plus, the video had Jay Kay dressed up in a space suit. Everything else from there revolved around having a space theme to it. The unique instrument I created has a vibrating-buzz effect which I thought was pretty cool and retro space sounding, so I used it for part of the rhythm (the dataflow definition diagram can be seen below). The granular synthesis is a sample of a crystal bell. I was going to use it in the composition but the Jamiroquai sample had a faint bell sound in it already. The granular synthesis on the bell sounded like a swarm of flies which wasn’t what I had expected, but it fit in nicely as a way to transition into other sections of the composition. At one point, the Jamiroquai sample is played backwards to vary the sound. I was going to use the sample played backwards for the whole thing because the timing seemed to work better but decided against it. Instead, it just made a small appearance. I decided to make the song a bit longer by adding harmony to the three tones being played. It’s just the same notes but in a different octave. I also messed around with a couple of notes as a sorry attempt at free styling. The end product is something that hopefully sounds like you're floating in space. Enjoy!
