Abstract:	We describe the rough set model for data analysis as introduced by Pawlak (1982), its tools, its advantages and its limits. We also suggest how it can be supplemented by procedures for data filtering, significance testing, and model selection which turn it into a viable tool for information analysis with a top - down approach, thus complementing traditional statistical models.
